Though natural hair is currently accepted in broader circles, and straight hair is just another option, the underlying message often remains that natural hair is unacceptable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist's Books - Edges (lace braid)</image:title>
      <image:caption>Edges is based on African/African ancestry braided hairstyles. Each book features a different “style.” The pieces were created during a time when there was much political dialog on the national, state and local level concerning (illegal) immigration. Often the dialog took an underlying tone of intolerance and had little to do with immigration status. The tones of intolerance (which were cross-cultural), reminded me of growing up in the 60’s and 70’s during integration. The hair treatment symbolizes how much activity, creativity and life happens on the “edges” of mainstream society, regardless of whether or not it is recognized.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Physically and metaphorically, skin functions as a protective covering and plays a significant role in identity. Integument examines various meanings that can be contained in our skins. The front side of the accordion contains layers discussing the science of skin and how its topography has the potential to evoke memory.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist's Books - Integument</image:title>
      <image:caption>There remains a barrier between “public” skin and “private” skin – that is, the division of scientific knowledge of the events that lead to a mark and what an individual thinks, remembers or concludes based on events that surround the mark. The reverse side of the accordion offers an example of the layers of meaning that can occur in an individual response.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Many pre-20th century homes lacked built in closets and furniture, such as armoires and dressers and cabinets were used to store clothing. Closets, by their very nature are memory keepers – even in the sparest environment they reveal something about the owner, and in cases where generations of owners have used them, closets can function as historical records. <image:caption>From 1912 to 1932, the Julius Rosenwald Fund provided matching grants to African American communities in the South, for the purpose of building schools. Rosenwald tells the story of the importance that two such schools played in the lives of a family living in southern Louisiana. Told as a snapshot, the book recalls a story of hardship, determination and triumph.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist's Books - Rosenwald</image:title>
      <image:caption>During a trip to my parent’s hometown in Louisiana, I passed by the spot where a gas station once stood. The story begins as I remember looking out across the street from the station years ago in that same spot, gazing at the school across the street. The image of the school sparks a flood of memories of family stories spanning two generations and is told in one sentence. The main character in the story is my aunt Vie, who was a teacher and then a librarian for the schools. While researching material for this book, I learned about the important role the Rosenwald schools played in the education of African Americans in the South in the early 20th century. I intended the book to be in a form that would allow it to be read by either unfolding it bit by bit to reveal the story, or hung on a wall and viewed in total.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Artist's Books - Storm Sequence</image:title>
      <image:caption>This book outlines the spirit of a ritual that my aunt would perform when the weather turned ugly. On an approaching storm, all would be called inside and though natives would consider the ritual a normal occurrence giving it little attention, being a visitor, I considered it to be a dramatic performance. Years later, I learned that my aunt was not alone in performing the Storm Sequence - it was practiced in some form by many in Pointe Coupee parish and possibly(probably) beyond. More recently, my aunt informed me that she still performs the sequence, though in an abbreviated format. The book is loosely patterned after the homemade shrines observed in some of my relatives homes. The numbers on the inside of the doors are years of documented significant damage caused by storms in the area.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - A Day in Richmond - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>After my five-week residency at Oaks Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF) last year, I spent a whirlwind of a week visiting friends in the DC, Maryland, Virginia area. During that week, I visited fellow book artist and most gracious host, IBé Crawley in Richmond, Virginia. IBé greeted me with Welcome! All roads lead to Richmond, did you know that? She proceeded to share some of the deep history of the city that resulted in my most recent book, A Day in Richmond.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59658650ebbd1aad5f39e4ee/89e142a3-2971-429d-a68e-f118f9fe0733/IMG_0898.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>News - A Day in Richmond - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>The train station where I arrived is located in Shockhoe Bottom, which was the center of Richmond’s slave trade and there are several historical sites nearby, including the African Burial Ground and Lumpkin’s Slave Jail. Two brass plaques marking the Richmond Slave Trail were embedded in the ground at the jail compound, and I mentioned offhandedly that I’d take rubbings had I thought to bring some paper and crayons. Well, IBé later produced some clay from her studio, and we returned to the site to roll the clay over the markers,.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - A Day in Richmond - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Fortunately, I took lots of notes that evening, which came in handy for the text, which incorporates some of the writing on both tiles. Each page takes the reader along a tour of the city, starting with the train station and ending at IBé Arts.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59658650ebbd1aad5f39e4ee/94c087a7-a9b8-4f4f-85f5-254bdde0a704/back%2Bblue%2Bstripe.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>News - A Day in Richmond - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I visited IBé’s studio, a historic building built by enslaved men, which she lovingly restored. From her art center we walked one block, to the former Appomattox Plantation and General Grant’s headquarters at City Point in Hopewell, Virginia. On the grounds grew wild grapes, figs, ginko, and pear trees, among others. After I returned home, IBé kindly gathered and sent plant samples, which I collographed onto board and frottaged onto the back of the accordion. Additional leaves were frottaged in color, cut out and collaged onto the back side of the accordion.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/59658650ebbd1aad5f39e4ee/3f1a4939-b315-4c4b-93b8-0addb59de7f2/IMG_0524.JPG</image:loc>
      <image:title>News - A Day in Richmond - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>As I painted watercolor onto the backs of the accordions, my application became freer and more saturated in color, with the blue granulating in pools. It seemed a shame to add additional paint - watercolors often have other things in mind - so I let them be. Five books have full color backs and five have only blue bands. A Day in Richmond is an edition of 11 and it is also a travelogue. The techniques and materials used in this project reflect my goal for the book to have an immediacy - as though it was created (almost) that day in Richmond.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Oak Springs Garden Foundation Residency, Part 1 - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Last summer, I spent 5 glorious weeks as a resident artist at Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF) in Upperville, Virginia. My first visit to OSGF was in 2021, to attend a two-week residential course in papermaking using wild plants with Alyssa Saccora of The Patchwork Underground. After that initial visit, I learned that on OSGF land and in the surrounding area were a number of farms maintained by slave labor until the end of the Civil War. I learned the names of six of the enslaved persons working on OSGF land, and immediately decided that if I ever returned, I would focus on finding more names and learning about their lives.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Oak Springs Garden Foundation Residency, Part 1 - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>I decided on another goal during that second visit to OSGF: to explore the landscape, particularly considering the native flora that the enslaved would have encountered. This required lots of hiking! Fortunately, our cohort included folks who routinely walk the wilds, including housemate Barbara Bosworth, who accompanied me on most of my ventures – identifying and collecting samples of native flora. I also read that many of the native plants may have been used for food and medicine. Plants were also used for protection, and among the enslaved of the African Diaspora, a practice was to place plants, beads, and other items into pouches that were worn around the neck, sometimes containing text or other symbology. These pouches go by several names, including mojo, juju, and gris-gris. This inspired two new works, A Gathering and Gris-gris.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Gathering (left) and Gris-gris (right) For Gris-gris, plants and found objects were placed in pouches and hung on the wall in a circle. The text on several of the pouches features medicinal plant usages. Gris-gris is a unique artist’s book.</image:caption>

      <image:title>News - Oak Springs Garden Foundation Residency, Part 1 - Make it stand out</image:title>
      <image:caption>Gris-gris The original (or prototype) version of A Gathering consisted of fresh plants with their names hung in a circle on the studio wall. The plants became withered and twisted, and were discarded upon leaving OSGF, but samples were pressed and later used to make prints for one edition, which also features names and usages of the plants that were gathered. A Gathering is a double-sided one sheet book – one side can be unfolded and read – that can be suspended and viewed from both sides. A Gathering is an edition of three.</image:caption>
